It starts in the middle of South Lake Tahoe and climbs two and a half miles to an observation deck at 9,100 feet, with the whole lake laid out below and the Carson Range behind. In winter this is the way onto one of the great American ski mountains, straddling two states; in summer it is the best view of Tahoe you can get without hiking for it. Walk back down through the village afterwards — the lakefront at Lakeview Commons is ten minutes away.
Bring: a warm layer — it is twenty degrees cooler at the top
