Two things happened on these steps. Jefferson Davis was sworn in as president of the Confederacy here in 1861, and a bronze star marks where he stood. A hundred and four years later the march from Selma arrived at the same steps and King asked how long — not long. Dexter Avenue runs downhill from the door, and King's church is at the bottom of it.
