Eighteen miles up a canyon from town and 9,200 feet at the base — an alpine village in the desert, founded by a Swiss-German émigré who was told the mountain was too steep to ski and built a resort on it anyway. Al's Run drops straight off the front of the lodge. If you're here early enough in the spring the lifts are still turning; if not, ride the Kachina chair for the view and drive back down the Enchanted Circle.
