A vast Romanesque castle of a prison, built in 1886 to look like a cathedral so inmates would be moved toward reform, and closed in 1990 as inhumane. Then Shawshank was filmed here and saved it: the cell block, the warden's office, the tunnel Andy crawls through. The east cell block is six tiers high and the largest free-standing steel cell block in the world.
