America's first destination ski resort, built in 1936 by the Union Pacific to give people a reason to ride its trains west. Its engineers adapted a machine used to load bananas onto boats and invented the chairlift here — the original is on display. The lodge corridors are lined with photographs of everyone who came: Hemingway finished For Whom the Bell Tolls in room 206.
