   Walk the 1.3-mile Tower Trail around the base of the 867-ft monolith, watching climbers inch up its columns (a sacred site to many Plains tribes).

   Spielberg put the mothership behind this rock in 1977 and turned a remote Wyoming monolith into one of the most recognisable shapes on earth; visits jumped and never came back down. The visitor center keeps a display about it. Worth holding both ideas at once — it's a film set to most of the world and a sacred site to more than twenty Plains tribes, who call it Bear Lodge.
